catching up with photos

My health is improving rapidly and I may even try to get my camera fixed tomorrow, after I volunteer at a local language school in the morning. For now, I can begin catching up with photos from the magical island of Ometepe.

On my first excursion into the island, I jumped off the bus not knowing exactly where I was. (It would not be the only time I jumped off a bus at that spot!) A traffic cop informed me that the bus in the direction I wanted to go was a couple hours away. So I began walking several miles to the farm I was due at. And found this place: Ojo de Agua, a beautiful natural swimming hole, full of cool clear water. Woo hoo!

On my way along the path, a local taxi driver insisted on picking me up and driving me to the swimming hole. He and his buddy said there was a party there I should come bring my fiddle over to. So I did. They brought me plantains and rice and soup, and we played rancheras and sang.

It was the birthday of the taxi driver (in the background). So I also played Happy Birthday along with Jambalaya on the fiddle.

On the way out of the springs I found Elena. She and her friend Anna danced with a hoop while I played fiddle songs, and thanked the heavens above for the bus being a half hour late.

Finca Magdalena, where I camped a night on very hard ground. I had applied to work there a week, but the vibe didn´t feel good, as if I would be more a burden to them (to give me a tourist experience) than a help.

On the way to the next finca, I found this cute little mom and pop, in the middle of nowhere, with great smoothies and two little tables outside. The owner talked to me about Nica culture and his experiences in the States over ten years. This place would also figure prominently in future events...
